Yin and Yang

阴阳 · Yīnyáng

Two complementary polarities describing contrasting but connected qualities. Each Heavenly Stem is classified as yin or yang; this distinction helps determine its Ten God relationship to the Day Master.

Neither polarity is a better or worse version of the other. Stem polarity is a traditional classification and is distinct from the sex at birth entered in our form.

The characters

阴yīnshade; the shaded side of a hill
阳yángsunlight; the sunny side of a hill

Together, 阴阳 reads “shade and sunlight”, first said of the two sides of one hill.
