相生

Generating Cycle

相生 · Xiāngshēng

The Five Elements' nurturing sequence: Wood produces Fire, Fire produces Earth, Earth produces Metal, Metal produces Water, and Water produces Wood. It describes a traditional relationship, not a measurement of physical energy.

In more detail

A producing relationship is read in the context of the whole chart. Producing more of an element is not automatically the most useful naming choice.

Also called: Productive Cycle · Sheng Cycle

The characters

  1. 相xiāngmutually; one to another
  2. 生shēngto give birth; to produce

Together, 相生 reads “giving rise to one another”.
